Congrats to our very own Music Teacher, Mrs. Acosta!

The Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation and the James and Louise Gates Scholarship committee selected Theoni Acosta as the recipient of the 2023 James and Louise Gates Oak Park District 97 Teacher Scholarship.

This grant is awarded annually to a teacher who aspires to positively affect the futures of their students, embodies a worthy role model for their colleagues, and enhances the quality and the reputation of Oak Park Elementary School District 97.

Celebrating 2022-23 Retirees

A wonderful group of educators and educational support staff will retire from Oak Park District 97 at the end of the 2022-23 school year at the retirement reception, including our own Math Enrichment teacher Mrs. LaHucik! Our retirees have made a profound impact on the lives of our students, families and community.

Here is a short video made by the district to celebrate our retirees and learn a little more about them!

Staff Spotlight:

Elyse Smith, Kindergarten Teacher

How long have you been a teacher?
This is my 17th year teaching! I taught at Longfellow for 11 years and have been at Mann for the past 6 years.

What do you like best about working at Mann?
I love working with the families, students, PTO, and staff! I really appreciate the PTO supporting some of the ideas I helped create this year such as the Kindergarten Family Reading Night and the Mannpower Mini Camp that will be happening this summer!

Favorite children's author/book:
Peanut Butter & Cupcake by Terry Border

Fun Facts:
*I am a lifelong Oak Parker. As a child I attended Longfellow, Julian, & OPRF. I went to ISU, but then came back to Oak Park for student teaching. I later got my masters at Concordia.

*I have 2 daughters. Madison is in 3rd grade at Hatch and Makena is at Concordia, but will be in kindergarten at Hatch next year! I am the Fundraising Chair on the Hatch PTO and a room parent.

*I was awarded the "Those Who Excel" award twice. In 2012 I was nominated in the Teacher Category and was awarded "Excellence in Teaching" through the Illinois State Board of Education. I was one of 9 finalists in the state of Illinois to be named "Teacher of the Year." In 2021, Mrs. Pines and I were nominated in the Team Category and were awarded the "Award of Meritorious Service" through the Illinois State Board of Education.
